There are a number of variations of the spelling of Smith in the various Smith families including Smyth, Smythe, Schmid, Schmidt, Smithson and others.

The name Smith is the most common surname in England and also very popular in the United States and originally referred to those who worked with metal.

Most of the Smith settlers in the United States came from England or Wales. The earliest documented Smith is John Smith who was born in 1587 in England. Our line of descendants from John Smith may be seen here.

Our closest Smith relative is Johanna Smith who married Abednigo Hail (aka Hale).

I propose to include a write up on my great friend Harold Smith of Beaumont, Texas as time permits. Harold was not a relative but was one of the finest friends a person could have.
