There are a number of variations of the spelling of Mayfield in the various Mayfield families including Mayville, Maifield, and others.

The name Mayfield is a name that refers to either the village of Mayfield in Staffordshire, England or the village of Mayfield in Sussex, England.

The Staffordshire location was referred to as Medevelde in the Domeday Book of 1086. By 1180, the same town was now known as Matherfelde. The Sussex location was first known as Magefeud in 1199.

Most of the Mayfield settlers in the United States came from England or Wales. The earliest documented Mayfield in our family is William Mayfield who was born about 1605 in England. Our line of descendants from William Mayfield may be seen here. Others in our Mayfield family trace their ancestry back to Germany to the Meyfeldt Castle which was located near Berlin, Germany.

Our closest Mayfield relative is Mary Ann Mayfield who married Peter Winchester Grindstaff.
