There are a number of variations of the spelling of Howard in the various Howard families. These variations include Hayword, Haward and many others.

The Howard family has been a dominant English noble family with extensive properties for many centuries. (longer than the United States has existed.) The first Howard in England reportedly showed up about 1221 in Cambridgeshire.

The name Howard has several origins. The Anglo Saxon version of the name means high warden or high leader. There are Norse and French versions also.

Most of the Howard settlers in the United States came from England or Wales. The earliest documented Howard in our line is Captain John R Howard who was born in England in 1738. Our line of descendants from Captain John R Howard may be seen here.

Our closest Howard relative is Lucille Howard who married James Edward Ellis, Sr.
